Histochemical Studies on the Mucosa in Chronic Inflammation of the Nasal Turbinates

Abstract
Author carried out histochemical studies, especially changes of the acid mucopolysaccharide in the mucosa of chronically inflammed nasal turbinates. Twenty-two specimens were obtained from the middle and inferior nasal turbinates and examined after hematoxyhin-eosin stain, alcian blue-PAS reaction, aldehyde fuchsin-akian blue stain, and toluidin blue stain.
The result obtained was summerized as follows:
1. The surface epithelium lining the mucosa was pseudostratified columnar epithelium which showed mild or moderate proliferation in half of patients with chronic inflammation of the nasal turbinates. There were a few cases in which squamous metaplasia was present or the epithelium was defected partially by ulcer or erosion. A considerable amount of the acid mucopalysaccharide was observed in the epithelial cells.
2. There were increased fibrous tissue, fibroblast and secretory gland in the subepithelial tissue of almost specimens, and bleeding or necrosis was seen in many specimens. A small or moderate amount of the acid mucopolysaccharide was observed in the connective tissue and secretory glands.
3. There were dilatation of the blood vessels and thickening of the wall of blood vessels in a great majority of patients. A small amount of the acid mucopolysaccharide was observed in the wall of blood vessels and in the cytoplasma of the endothelium of blood vessels and capillaries.
